What We Collect

Speak Shakespeare does not require an account with us or ask for your name or email. Optional Game Center sign-in on iOS is handled by Apple. We collect how the app is used and how it fails through Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics:

• Which screens are opened and which features are used
• The device model, operating system version, language and country
• An identifier Firebase gives this installation, which is reset when the app is deleted
• Crash reports: where the app stopped and what it was doing

Firebase events do not include your audio or transcript. Firebase's own handling of this data is described in the Firebase Privacy and Security policy.

The Microphone

The app asks for the microphone so it can check your reading. When the downloaded model is ready, recognition can run on your device. Where server recognition is available, the app sends an attempt to our server while the model is not ready or when you select server-only mode. The server uses the audio to return a transcript and does not retain either one after the request.

What Stays On Your Device

Your takes are kept so you can hear yourself back: one audio file per piece of the poem, together with the transcript and your reading progress. These records are stored on your device. A copy of an attempt may be sent for server recognition as described above. Starting a sonnet over inside the app deletes the recordings kept for that exercise, and deleting the app removes its local data.

Network Use

The app downloads its speech recognition model from botforge.pro or spb.apakabar.fm. It fetches the text and narrator's recordings from apakabar.fm or spb.apakabar.fm. Requests for server recognition use the latter two addresses. With the model and needed recordings on your device, local recognition can work without a connection. Usage and crash reports are sent when a connection is available.

Game Center on iOS

If you sign in to Game Center, the app submits your total points to Apple's leaderboard. Individual recordings and transcripts are not submitted to Game Center.
